The first step of anything is a little terrifying. When it comes to writing, I’m a fan of middles and endings. I’ve never gone on a first date until the relationship was already underway. The first day at a new job, especially around lunch-time when you don’t know where to eat, is my personal vision of hell.
But here we are, at the beginning of something.
I’m pulling together a few projects to share on this newsletter, but the first few weeks will be random bits and pieces. For today, a quick visual introduction to me and to my work (and my cat):
Reading: The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishigiro
Listening: in defense of my own happiness by Joy Oladokun
What would you like to see covered in this newsletter as I get into comics-making process? Let me know!
Hello! Looking forward to your newsletter. I was wondering if you would talk about how long the process of making a graphic novel like The Girl From the Sea is? Does it span multiple years? Do you work on it along with another job? Also, it seems like you're a big fan of camping, so what foods are your favorite for campsites? I'm planning a trip soon and I'm not sure yet what kind of food to bring. Cheers! <3
I’m so excited to hear that you’re starting this newsletter! I’ve been a fan of your works since The Witch Boy was released, and it was one of the books that inspired me to start writing/drawing my own stories. I’d love to hear about your workflow for comic-making - how do you come up with ideas, which of those ideas get turned into graphic novels vs shorter stories (ex. How the Best Hunter), how much say does your editor/publisher have in deciding which stories you make into full graphic novels. I’d also be very interested in learning more about the technical side of making comics - script writing, thumbnailing, what are your favourite settings/tips/processes for using photoshop, or what it’s like working with a colourist or writer. Looking forward to reading more from you!
