I’m going to take you through the process of a graphic novel in a series of posts. This is from my perspective, as a writer and artist who makes fantasy books for middle grade and young adult readers - but hopefully it will be helpful even if you’re interested in making a different kind of book!
Strong Female Protagonist is one of the best comic series ever, and I have read it several times. I would really like to know if you ever plan to finish it, and if, so when?
I really enjoy this series! I learn so much from every post. Thanks for the printer recommendations, I am looking for more options for some of my weirder zines (haiku poetry comics) Another option for self-publishing comics is creating epub/mobi versions of ebooks and selling them on sites like Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books, and dozens of others. With Amazon, you can even self-pub in paperback or hardback. I figure the more places people can find my comics the better!
I'd love to hear you talk about collaboration between an artist and a writer on one graphic novel if you have any thoughts on it. I'm writing a script now, but I don't think my art skills are enough to illustrate it by myself.
Molly, thank you so much for taking the time to impart your creative wisdom to us! It’s a treasure trove of information that is more than worth the subscription price. Do you think you will do more on Substack? I would be interested in seeing more previously unpublished comics!
Emily Carroll's comics in the 2010s were the shiznit. Total #goals.
